The apostle Paul, in Ephesians 6:10-20 (NIV), describes different spiritual aids that we can use to help us live the Christian life, especially in light of the battles we face. One of these items is the “sword of the Spirit” (Ephesians 6:17 (NIV)). The sword he was referring to was a short, stabbing sword the Romans used in close, hand-to-hand combat. The “sword of the Spirit” is, of course, the word of God. We are to use the Bible to give us direction and to help us stand against the “the devil’s schemes” (Ephesians 6:11 & 2 Corinthians 2:11). The devil is a very wise, experienced foe who is always looking for ways to deceive us. As my Mom used to say, “he is a snake in the grass!”
In a practical way, I think the illustration of the sword is a huge help for us. Many people find it difficult to memorize larger portions of scripture. I think, what Paul is encouraging us to do is to break down passages into small statements that we can memorize and then bring to remembrance as we face the daily challenges of life. The illustration of the 23rd Psalm is an example of how we can apply this. We can also take one of these short statements and meditate on it. For instance, what does it mean to you to have “the Lord as your shepherd?” It is a “double edged sword.”
I encourage you, this day, to look over this Psalm 23 and apply it, over time, to your life. God bless you and may you “stick it to” the challenges you are facing with the ultimate weapon: the word of God!
The Lord is my shepherd
That’s relationship!
I shall not want
That’s supply!
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures
That’s rest!
He leadeth me beside the still waters
That’s refreshment!
He restoreth my soul
That’s healing!
He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness
That’s guidance!
For His name’s sake
That’s purpose!
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
That’s challenge!
I will fear no evil
That’s assurance!
For thou art with me
That’s faithfulness!
Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me
That’s shelter!
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies
That’s hope!
Thou anointest my head with oil
That’s consecration!
My cup runneth over
That’s abundance!
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life
That’s blessing!
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord
That’s security!
Forever
That’s eternity!
