Advent: Day 14

“After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was.” (Matthew 2:9 (NIV)).

I love the traditions of Christmas. One of my favourites is the Christmas tree. The Christmas tree comes to us from Germany. The Christmas tree evolved from two traditions, the “paradise tree” and the “triangular shelf”, which held the decorations of Christmas. They combined the two to give us the tradition we have today. Each year, we place a star on top of our Christmas tree and decorate it with items that remind us of the meaning and results of that first Christmas. May your tree light up you home with joy and may it remind you of the true meaning of Christmas.

Prayer: We thank you, Father, for traditions like the Christmas tree which remind us of the true meaning of Christmas. It points us to the true life we have in Jesus and the many emblems that tell the Christmas story. As we decorate our trees and enjoy them over the Christmas season, may it draw us once again to the wonder of that night so long ago. In Jesus’ Name – Amen
