Matthew 2:11-12 (NIV) “On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.”
I love gift giving but am not very good at it. It is usually my wife and daughter and son that do most of the shopping for me. Thanks guys! But, I have gift giving in my heart at Christmas because it represents, to me, the essence of Christmas - God’s love to us in the gift of His Son. It doesn’t have to be big or flashy. Our gift giving isn’t. But, it is our way, as a family, of saying “I love you!” If my Father-in-law was alive, it would be his way of playing a joke on us (he put some interesting presents under the tree, over the years)! So, I don’t know how you feel about gift giving but, for me, it represents love, grace and thanksgiving every Christmas season. It doesn’t have to be a commercial celebration, just a Christ like action.
Prayer: Father, we start off this day by saying thank you for the "indescribable gift” of your Son (2 Corinthians 9:15 NIV). Your gift reminds us of how we can share, with others, the gifts of time, resources and love. Give us a heart for sharing and help us to be grace givers, expecting nothing in return. May the gift of your Son empower our Christmas season to share that love “that has been shed abroad in our hearts.” (Romans 5:5 KJV) In Jesus' name - Amen
